Bible Class Topic: Self-Control (Brief Teaching)

Meaning: Self Discipline, Willpower, Restraint, Self-will, Strength of Mind, Strength of will.

Text Study:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance (Self-Control): against such there is no law.
Gal 5:22-23

Personal Definition: Self-Control is self-induced control/power which is a function of the understanding one has based on his/her placement (adoption/positioning) in Christ.

Self-Control therefore, involves training of one’s mind and spirit in order to align with the stipulations of the scripture as regards quality and character of the believer.
See (1 Corinthians  6:12, 10:23)

Note: There is a thin line between Self-Control and Patience. Whereas patience is at the receiving end Self-Control is at the giving end in a situation. Also, whereas patience may be needed in order to make some of the fruit to manifest Self-Control is needed to make all to work better in the life of a believer.

 Areas we need self-control:

1.      Words 2. Thinking 3. Decision/Choice 4. Actions 5. Emotions 6. Character 7. Habit.

These things above lead to our destination in life. (Things to think of Phil 4:8)

Formulas To Know:

1. When you are alone, mind your thoughts.
2. When you are with friends, mind your tongue
3. When you are angry, mind your temper
4. When you are with people, mind your behavior.
5. When you are in trouble, mind your emotions.

Self-Control is needed in dissipating our Spiritual Gifts and Anointing.

Example:  Luk 9:54-56 (Emotional Spirit of vengeance should be controlled)

King David’s lack of self-control:-

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman.  And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child. (2 Sam 11:2-5)

Also Abraham … lacked the self-control in the case of Hagar.

Marriage: In choosing a wife or husband.. Self-control is highly required, God does not give a wife or husband, and you choose your mates or spouses. (Proverbs 18:22) Marriage is more of a physical thing than spiritual. Since it is more physical than spiritual selection must be as it pleases the one in question. Weighing the physical appearance should be a factor to be considered. You cannot force someone to agree to marry you, but you can pray that God will create circumstance that will make her to agree to marry you.

Why do we need to be Self-Controlled?

Self-Control has nothing to do with one’s salvation, but it has all to do with the reward every believer will get at last day from our Lord Jesus Christ. See (1Cor 9:24-27), also  (1Cor 3:12-15)
