Bible Class Topic: Soul –Winning (What the Soul Worth)

Sub-Title:- Understanding The Worth Of The Soul and Praying For Them

Bible Text:

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

(Matt 16:26)

In the verse above the questions in it comes in two folds and they are begging for answers. If properly considered and answered the outcome should be that there is nothing that can be equated to the soul. This implies that the soul of man is the most vital part of him because nothing in this world can be equated to it.
So if there is nothing that can be compared to the soul of man, why is it that many are giving their souls away? Let’s see some of the reasons as listed below.

1.    Lack Of Knowledge Of What Has Been Done: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” (Hos 4:6).
Solution: Due to lack of the knowledge of what has been done as regards to salvation of man many are giving their souls away. Therefore the onus is every believer to make this knowledge available. This is important because if one knows better he or she will do better.

2.    Fear Of Losing Self:  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,” (2Tim 3:2).
Solution: There is no place to gain self except in Christ (Matt 16:25, Col 2:10).

3.    The Quest To Be Rich or Wealthy: “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1Tim 6:9-10)
Solution: (1Tim 6:6-8, Prov 11:28, 13:7, Luk 12:15)

4.    What one has been thought:  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” (Col 2:7-8)
Solution: (Mark 4:24) The words you hear molds the kind of life you live, that is why we need to give them the word of life.

The food for the soul: And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.” (De 8:3)  Also see (Jn 6:63).
Solution: Just because of food many have sold their souls to the devil like Esau did. The truth remains that whatever we consume through our mouth will be excreted out and therefore will not satisfy the physical hunger.

Tools For Evangelism – Prayer

The role of prayer as regards to evangelism cannot be over emphasized or accentuated. Prayers should be made in two ways (ie for the people going out to win souls and for the souls to be worn.) John The Baptist, James and Peter examples (Acts 12:3-5, 7).

What To Pray For

1.    Prayer for the harvesters to come: Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” (Matt 9:37-38). Because if there are no harvesters no souls will be worn.
2.    Prayer for utterance for the harvesters: “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel” (Eph 6:19, Col 4:2-4, 1Cor 1:5).
3.    Prayer for door opening: “But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” (1Cor 16:8-9). Also see (2Cor 2:12).
4.    Prayer for them to be accepted by the people: “Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints; (Rom 15:30-31).
5.    Prayer for their protection: “And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.” (1Thess 3:2).
6.    Prayer for the confirmation of their words: “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” (Mk 16:20).
7.    Prayer for them not to be entangled in the affairs of this life (2Tim 2:3-4)

Prayers For The Souls

1.    Pray that every veil covering the eyes of their heart should be removed: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (2Cor 4:3-4)
2.    For their eyes of understanding to be enlightened: “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, (Eph 1:18).
3.    Prayer for the people who are in authority: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1Tim 2:1-4). If the people in authority will allow the gospel to flow, definitely there will no hindrance to what the harvester can do.
