Bible Study: Cogitating On The Factors That Distablize The Unity Of Believers

Bible Study: The Unity Of Believers

Pivotal Verses:

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”
Eph 4:11-14

Note: Unity of faith here means one doctrine in Christ…. It is worthy to note that until this takes place Christ cannot come. It is important to note that why Christ gave the offices/positions in the church is for: 1. Edification 2. To achieve unity of faith. 3. By this a perfect knowledge of the son of God is revealed. 4. As a result a perfect man in Christ is produced. 5. Such believers will not be tossed about by every wind of doctrine.

“Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.”
1Peter 3:8-9

Note: The unity of faith cannot be achieved if we do not have one mind. The mind here to have is the mind of Christ. Ref. (1Cor 1:10, 2:16, 1Jn 5:20) such minds can easily produce the qualities mentioned in this verse (1Peter 3:8-9)
It is significant to note that, scripturally the church is viewed as an entity that is made up of believers who are of one family. Sometimes, in a family the following points mention below are some of the things that induce dissension and division. For continuous unity among the believers these things must be checked.

1.      Pomposity or haughtiness:

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”                                                         (Roms 12:3)

Note: This kind of attitude creates classes and where people are categorized unity cannot be preserved. Ref: (Phil 2:3-4) When we regard each other every other thing flows and join together.

2.      Not giving honour to whom honour is due:

“Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”           (1Tim 5:17)

Note: Men who God placed to take care of us should be honoured. We don’t talk against them when they are going through situations, rather we support them with prayers. Ref (Provb 24:17-18)

3.      Erroneous Teaching:

”But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.”       (Gal 2:11-16)

Note: It should be recalled that Peter preached on the Pentecost day and three thousand souls were saved, is found in this quotation inducing error, thank God for the courage of Apostle in confronting him. If the error of Peter was allowed to continue it would have aided division among the believers. Ref: (Titus 2:1, 6) Rev 2:4-6

4.      Tribalism and Dichotomy:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal 3:28)

Note: Church is a fraternity that is purchased with the blood of Jesus. There should be no tribal sentiments among believers.

5.      Sacred Cows:
“For there is no respect of persons with God.”

Note: The abuse of Ps 105:15 should be corrected. When leaders make mistakes they should be corrected with love Ref:  (Gal 6:1) We should judge sin among us with love because we have the spirit of Christ (1Cor 2:15, 6:1-2, 5-7)

6.      Rumormongering and lying

“For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;” (1Tim 1:10).

Note: The consequence of this is stated in Jonah 2:8
